Shifting the Paradigm

Shifting the Paradigm from Deficit-Oriented Schools

to Asset-based Models: Why Leaders Need to

Promote an Asset-Orientation in Our Schools

By: Shannon Renkly, Katherine Bertolini

Reading this, it makes me think how important for teachers should be to know well about the students and how they should be prepared to help all of their children in any way. I feel like every student who is thinking about being a teacher should read articles like this because it will be so helpful, and I think it also will motivate students to be creative when they become teachers. This also show that if a better community is made, parents and teacher can be involved in the education of their children, it will be very important because they would discover the talents that students have and would even be more involved in different activities.

I remember when I was in high school, in 10th grade I was very careless, and I did not worry about doing all my homework, until one of my teachers, it was my math teacher, she told me that I needed to improve my grades, and I told her I am still learning the language, and that is why it is difficult for me to do my homework on time, she told me then come to my class after school and she will help we with whatever she could, in that case would be only the translation because at that time it was the most difficult thing for me. So, I stayed after school like 2-3 times a week and she always had two dictionaries so I could look up the words and she looked up for others, that helped me a lot and that is how I was able to improve my grades. As the article mentioned, teacher should be involved to know how to help their students, and she got involved, she helped me, and she got closer to me and learned more about me.
